New Year, New You
New year, new you.
It’s a phrase I’ve heard so many times over the years.
It’s easy to wait until 1 January to decide that this will be the moment things change.
Why Do We Wait to Begin?
But I often wonder why we feel the need to wait for a defining moment to reset the clock at the end of the year for a new you.
Maybe it’s because we like the countdown. A sense of permission. A knowing that choosing change often comes with a cost.
The Cost of Change
Choosing change usually means giving something up, some form of comfort or freedom.
That might look like starting a diet (again, especially after Christmas), giving up the snacks or cheeky chocolates. Or it might be something much deeper and more personal, something that has the potential to shift not only your life, but the lives of those around you.
What No Longer Fits
The start of a new year creates space. Space to pause, to reflect, and to gently review what is truly supporting your growth versus what is quietly stifling it.
Old habits that no longer serve the future you.
A friendship that no longer aligns, even though that person was once one of the most important people in your life.
A job that no longer brings joy, purpose, or energy.
Closing One Chapter
It’s okay to feel ready for the end of another chapter.
It’s okay to be excited about drawing a line in the sand and hoping for something better—something more fulfilling—in the year ahead.
Beginnings Aren’t Bound to Dates
To me, the end of a year feels like a clear and definitive break between the old and the new. But while these moments often feel rare, they don’t actually have to be.
That same opportunity to begin again can arrive on a Monday morning, on your birthday, after a holiday, or during a moment that feels mind-boggling or life-changing—like moving abroad.
Change doesn’t belong to the calendar.
It belongs to awareness.
And to the quiet decision that something needs to shift.
